A painting by artist Michelle Bowe depicting a hawksbill turtle has been unveiled at a newly created art space hosted by Standard Distribution and Sales Barbados Ltd in Wildey.

The artwork, titled Sally – The Hawksbill, was presented to Anthony N Sabga III, group chief executive of Standard’s parent conglomerate ANSA McAl Group, during his recent visit to Barbados for the Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Awards.

Bowe’s scenic painting marks the start of a new initiative by the furniture and appliance retailer to host revolving exhibitions of artists’ work. Bowe is the first Barbadian artist to be featured in this innovative space, which aims to support and promote the vibrant art scene in Barbados.

In line with ANSA McAl’s sustainability drive, the hawksbill turtle depicted symbolises the island’s rich natural heritage and the importance of environmental conservation, coinciding with World Sea Turtle Day on Sunday, emphasising the significance of protecting these endangered species and their habitats.

“We are thrilled to showcase Michelle Bowe’s extraordinary work and to have Mr Sabga be among the first to view the wall,” said Renatta Mohammed, general manager at Standard Distribution and Sales Barbados Ltd. “Our new art space is a testament to our dedication to supporting local talent and contributing to the cultural landscape of Barbados – it’s The heART of Standard’.”

Sabga, expressing his appreciation, said: “This beautiful painting of a hawksbill turtle [known to nest in Barbados between April and November annually], captures the essence of our sustainability efforts and reminds us of the importance of preserving our environment for future generations. We are proud to support local artists like Michelle Bowe who inspire us through their work.”

Bowe’s exhibition is now open to the public, with visitors encouraged to explore the artwork and witness her remarkable talent. Pieces including soft furnishings carrying the prints are also available for sale via Standard’s Wildey showroom. (PR)
